The squadron was formed in March 1918 and saw action in France during the First World War before disbanding in 1919. It reformed in 1937 and was equipped with Wellingtons at the start of World War Two. These were replaced by the Stirling in November 1941 and then by Lancasters in August 1944. Post war it operated Lincolns, became the first unit to operate the Boeing Washingtons, and Canberras before disbanding in 1956.
