The squadron was formed in October 1917 as a fighter squadron used for home defence, but never saw action before it was disbanded in 1919. It reformed in 1937. During the Second World War the squadron flew Blenheims, Fortresses, Stirlings before converting to Lancasters in mid 1944. Post war the squadron flew Lincolns, Washingtons, Canberras and Valiants until disbanding for good in 1965.
