Herbert "Jack" Benson hailed from Romford in Essex. The crew were shot down and had to bail out over Switzerland. Benson was badly wounded by the burst of flak that hit the aircraft and although able to escape by parachute died from loss of blood, shock and exposure. Jack Benson is buried in Vevey (St. Martin's) Cemetery. The full story of Jack Benson's last operation is documented in Chapter 8 of Roger Anthoine's excellent book "Infringing Neutrality - The RAF in Switzerland 1940-45".
