Harold Dan Muir, known as Dan, was born on 11th January 1918 to Harold and Edith Muir of Rochdale, England. Dan worked as an Estimating Engineer for J Holroyd & Co Ltd, a local firm in Milnrow, who supplied specialist tooling and components to the aircraft industry. He was a keen cyclist and member of the Manchester Wheelers’ Club, holding the local 25-mile timed trial record before the war. He volunteered for aircrew duties in the RAFVR, initially as a pilot, but then being selected as an Air Bomber and remained on instructor duties in Canada for 9 months before returning to the UK. He completed a full tour with the Bill Smith crew on 100 Sqn and was awarded the DFC before instructor duties at 1667 HCU and a secondment to BOAC. Dan married Ivy Harrington Moorhouse during his tour on 100 Sqn on 29th April 1944 and they had two children. After the war, Dan eventually returned to engineering, working for Marconi Company Ltd in Essex. Sadly, he died in 1974, at the age of 56, from cancer.
